No. 24
It’s Official!
Hello everyone,
Finally! The news we all have long waited for!
We’re delighted to let you know that by a unanimous "Yes" vote, Melville Council approved the establishment of the Melville Bird Sanctuary (MBS) and its Stages 1 and 2 boundaries at its Meeting this evening. Thank you to our supporters who attended the meeting in person and online.
We’re very grateful to DBCA, especially Mark Cugley and the City, especially Mick McCarthy, for their support in making the MBS a reality. A huge thank you to Melville Council for its unanimous decision and a very special thank you to Cr Jane Edinger who spoke to the motion for the MBS and gave a very moving speech. We also thank Cr Margaret Sanford for her long term support for the Melville Bird Sanctuary concept.
We owe our Member for Bicton, Lisa O’Malley MLA, a debt of gratitude for being our supporter and encourager from Day 1. It was Lisa who put us in touch with community leaders and elected representatives so we could bring to their attention the Melville Bird Sanctuary proposal and win support. Long may she continue!
Margaret Matassa from Swan Estuary Reserves Action Group and Peter Neesham from Bicton Environmental Action Group were busy this morning with their groups planting their areas in the pouring rain and ‘freezing’ cold. We salute them both and their groups for their enduring commitment to the environment.
That’s it for now. We’ll keep you posted of what needs to happen next. We’re keen to arrange another Birdwatching Walk soon. The birds are plentiful out there! Stay tuned.
All the best,
Tom Lubin and Jenny Christenson
